Wildfire Preparedness and Self Storage 1

To use self-storage for wildfire preparedness, protect items from smoke damage by using sealed plastic containers and wrapping furniture in protective coverings. Choose a facility with strong fire safety measures, like sprinklers. Consider using portable storage units designed to be durable, weather-resistant, and potentially movable to a safer location. You should also document your belongings and their storage locations for insurance purposes and regularly check the condition of the storage unit.

Before storing items:

  • Choose the Right Storage Unit:Look for facilities with robust security features, reliable sprinkler systems, and proper fire-safety protocols.
  • Use the Right Containers:Opt for smoke-resistant, airtight plastic containers instead of cardboard boxes, which easily let smoke seep through.
  • Protect Larger Items:Wrap items too large for containers, like furniture, in plastic or other protective coverings to shield them from smoke, dust, and particles.
  • Document Your Belongings:Take photos or videos of your stored items and keep a record of your unit's contents for insurance purposes if damage occurs.
  • Consider Fire-Resistant Options:For valuable items, consider storing them in a fire-resistant safe or lockbox within your storage unit or at home.

During a wildfire event:

  • Prioritize Safety:Your personal safety and that of your family and pets is the top priority during an evacuation.
  • Do Not Enter Evacuation Zones:Follow all instructions from authorities and avoid returning to your home or self-storage unit until it is officially declared safe.
  • Contact Your Storage Provider:Once it is safe to do so, contact your self-storage facility and your insurance provider to report any damage and start the claims process.

After a wildfire:
