Wildfire Preparedness and Self Storage

To use self storage for wildfire preparedness, store irreplaceable valuables in smoke-resistant, airtight plastic containers located in a facility outside high-risk areas if possible, and prioritize facilities with robust fire safety measures. Also, use fire-resistant portable units and remove flammable materials from storage areas. Regularly check your unit for security and damage to maintain optimal protection for your belongings in case of an emergency evacuation. 

Before a Wildfire

  • Choose the Right Unit:Select a storage unit located outside fire-prone areas to reduce risk. 
  • Pack for Protection:Use plastic containers, not cardboard, to protect items from smoke and moisture. Wrap larger items in plastic or other coverings for added protection. 
  • Opt for Fire-Resistant Containers:Consider fire-resistant or water-tight bins to provide better protection for valuables like photos and heirlooms. 
  • Don't Store Flammables:Avoid storing hazardous items such as propane tanks, gasoline, aerosols, and flammable cleaners in or near your unit. 
  • Consider a Portable Unit:A weather- and fire-resistant portable storage unit can be used to protect items on-site or moved to a safe location if evacuation is necessary. 
  • Create a Fire-Resistant Zone Around Your Home:Remove dead plants, debris, and other combustible materials within at least 30 feet of your house. 
  • Regularly Check Your Unit:Inspect your storage unit periodically to ensure it remains secure and undamaged, replacing any containers that are compromised. 

During an Evacuation 

  • Act Immediately:Evacuate as soon as officials issue an order or you feel threatened, as wildfires can spread rapidly.
  • Prioritize Valuables:Store irreplaceable items in a storage unit to make your evacuation faster and less stressful.

If You Experience a Fire 

  • Contact Your Insurance Provider:If your belongings are damaged, file a claim with your storage insurance provider as soon as possible.
  • Gather Documentation:Collect photos of the damage and any relevant reports from the storage facility to support your claim.
